I saw this article on #lopsa. Basically, someone posts a blog entry about the a new Facebook interface. Hundreds of people from all over the internet show up complaining in the comments that they don't like the new facebook. How did these people end up on a blog instead of facebook? Because they're just typing 'facebook login' into google rather than going to http://www.facebook.com.
I had no idea people were so clueless about how the internet works. I have to wonder what would happen if some malicious person managed to game google's search order to put a malicious web site that recorded login names and passwords and then passed the users on to the real facebook. Scary.

Yesterday, when I was getting gas a guy pulled up at the neighbouring gas dispenser in a newish BMW and started asking me questions about my 2007 VW Rabbit. He said he was thinking of getting a 2nd car and said he liked the way the Rabbit looked. IMMD.

While working at the new house, Leigh and I took a break and got some sandwiches at Mike's Deli. I got the #1 and Leigh got the #70. It is really good. I'm glad there's a good deli within walking or biking distance, that's something I miss from living in Highland Park, NJ.

This weekend has been spent packing the condo and working on the house. We got a broken outlet fixed, replaced a under-spec rheostat with a switch and had all the ducts cleaned. (I think they vacuumed out 50 pounds of dust from the ducts, and some of it was "chunky".) Today I packed up and tossed a bunch of computer stuff. Honestly, I had 6 DB25->Centronics 50 SCSI cables. I don't even *HAVE* any SCSI drives anymore. We also tossed a can of beans that had travelled from the Kroger down the street from here when Leigh lived in AA in 2004, to Pittsburgh -> Apartment 1 in NJ -> Apartment 2 in NJ and back to Ann Arbor, with over 1,200 miles round trip. And now it's being recycled. I hate packing, but I can't wait to move.

Obviously.
But Leigh and I noticed something really amusing today. We noticed that the twins manning the police station, one of them reads "Iain Banks" and the other reads "Iain M. Banks". Clever.

My wife (who is a librarian) sent me this link: "Libraries and Linux: The Strange Parallels of Stacks and Software". I've often thought that librarians had a lot of shared aspects with open source software, and it's neat to see someone else agree.

At the University, I see a lot of people with this in their email signature: P GO GREEN & KEEP THIS E-MAIL ON THE SCREEN
Since I use a text-only mail client, this looks like: "P GO GREEN & KEEP THIS E-MAIL ON THE SCREEN"
Of course, the email is HTML and the "P" is in the webdings font, which I guess makes it look like a tree and a path, but in my text-only email client, it evokes a completely different message.

See obleighvious's post for a run-down.
Of course, I didn't attend the preconference with her, I just lazed about reading books and watching even more daytime TV. I read Nightwatch by Sergei Lukyanenko, Steal Across the Sky by Nancy Kress and started reading Norse Code by Greg Van Eekhout. I'm going to read Sergei Lukyanenko's next book Daywatch next, I think, when I have time again.

Well, I only lasted a year at The College of Literature, Science and the Arts IT Group. Today is my last day, and I started a bit couple days more than a year ago. I really liked the people in my group and other colleagues in the department (hi jss1113), but my role was changing and it was time to go. Next week I start at CAEN at the School of Engineering, also at the University of Michigan. So, no big changes in the location, although I'm really excited about what I'll be doing at CAEN. I'm sure I'll know more about it next week.
The one sad thing about changing jobs is that it means I won't be able to see obleighvious at lunchtime. I'll see how difficult it'll be to at least try to make it down to central campus once a week to meet her for lunch. Also, I'm completely unaware of what kind of lunch places there are on North Campus, so I'm going to have to do some exploring. I hope parking isn't as much of a nightmare as it was on Central Campus.

Houdini has been hanging out on my lap a lot lately. Both of us are hangin' out in the easy chair.

Yet again, Fox has NASCAR playing when the Simpsons should be playing, and of course, the TiVo doesn't record it. FOX and NASCAR can die in a fire.

I saw this on engadget: BUGmodules. Basically, gizmos that plug together like legos to make different gadgets. So cool.

So, obleighvious and I decided to give the local Trader Joes a try when we went out shopping recently. I kept hearing such raving reviews from friends and colleagues, so I figured it couldn't hurt to try. Boy, was I wrong. The salmon was awful and more expensive than the same product from Meijer, the selection was awful and the whole store was poorly organized. I'm definitely never going back. Fortunately, I tried the local Indian grocery store, and found they had the lentils I wanted.
